The Mexican Hat rock formation is a striking geological feature located near the town of Mexican Hat in southeastern Utah, United States.
The Mexican Hat rock formation resembles a traditional Mexican sombrero or hat, with a wide, flat brim and a tall, narrow crown. The rock is made of sandstone and has been sculpted over millions of years by erosion from wind and water and is situated on the east bank of the San Juan River, just outside the town of Mexican Hat. It is a prominent landmark in the area and can be easily seen from nearby highways and viewpoints.
The rock formation is a type of geological feature known as a hoodoo. Hoodoos are tall, thin spires of rock that are created through the differential erosion of sedimentary rock layers. Over time, the softer rock beneath the harder capstone erodes more quickly, resulting in the distinctive shape of the hoodoo.
