Teena Marie, nicknamed Lady T, was a protegée of the late funk legend Rick James, and is notable as one of the few successful multi-ethnic performers of R&B. Marie is best recognized for her distinctive voice, a versatile and vivacious soprano that embodies soul, funk, rock, and any other style that elevated her spirits and inspired her creativity. She deserves recognition for it, as well as for every other skill she exhibited during the course of her three-decade career as a singer, songwriter, arranger, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.
