Brave vigilantes locked a suspected thief inside the shop they saw him robbing and then held him when he broke out until police arrived.

Unnamed citizen crime fighters spotted the masked man apparently robbing a kitchen furniture shop in the city of Estepona, in the southern Spanish province of Malaga in the early hours of the morning.

The quick-thinking men locked the shop’s glass front doors and a video shot by one of them shows the desperate captive trying to kick them open.

One man is heard goading the suspected thief, saying: "Come on, go ahead… try to do it."

The alleged thief does manage to break open the doors after a few kicks but the vigilantes push him back inside and do not let him leave.

Police who arrived, having been called by one of the amateur crime-fighters, said they found three men with the detained suspect.

He reportedly also grappled with the police officers as they arrested him.

The unnamed 23-year-old Spanish national was charged with robbery and resisting arrest.

The shop’s management reported that a television was the only item damaged in the incident, as the doors were surprisingly unharmed.

Police said they seized a large pair of pliers, which are seen in the alleged thief’s hand in the video as he breaks out.
