City dwellers were amazed to see a large family of otters gambolling around in the street.

Locals filmed in amazement as the semi-aquatic mammals ran through the city-state of Singapore.

Around 14 animals are seen in the clip, with five youngsters among them, going along a quiet residential street.

Locals speculated on net forums that the otters had come from their home on the banks of the nearby Kallang River.

Some thought they were seeing an adorable family outing but others pointed out that it was more likely the otters were simply lost or that something had disturbed their habitat.

Local media noted that the animals are always popular with Singaporeans when seen in an urban environment, as they had been recently at the city’s Changi Airport.

The otters disappeared from view shortly after being filmed and it is not known where they went next.

There are two species of otter living in Singapore: the smooth-coated (Lutrogale perspicillata) and the Asian short-clawed (Aonyx cinerea).

Both species are classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

It is not known which species is seen in the clip and they may even be hybrids, as the two species have been known to interbreed.
