The odd fad sees pet owners film themselves putting whole eggs into their dog's mouth to see if they will take it without crushing it. The odd viral craze sees pet owners put eggs into their dog's mouths to see if it will hold it gently or crush it to bits. It's the pet craze sweeping the internet. But what are the hidden dangers behind the Golden Retriever Egg Challenge?

Their human masters film the results which range from adorable to messy.Thousands of pet owners around the world have uploaded YouTube and Twitter videos of themselves taking part. And it's not only golden retrievers getting in on the act. But Dr Paula Parker, the president of the Australian Veterinary Association, has warned it could kill your pet. Talking to Buzzfeed, she said: "Placing a raw egg in a dog’s mouth is a health risk.

"It is choking hazard as the egg may become lodged in the dog’s throat. "However, there is also a risk of the dog contracting an infection from bacteria that is present on the outside of the egg shell, for example, salmonella." She added: "Salmonella can be present both inside and outside the shell, so even if the egg does not break, if the bacteria is present on the outside of the shell it could lead to health concerns including diarrhea and vomiting."

"A lot of people think it's cute but some others are worried about what would've happened if Sookie had bit into the egg." It comes after doctors warned against the Tide Pod challenge - a craze which sees youngsters challenge each other to eat liquid filled washing detergent pellets. Even a small amount of the highly-concentrated liquid detergent can cause diarrhea, vomiting and breathing difficulties.
