This is the moment passengers jumped out of the way as a huge avalanche of snow crashed off a railway station roof and onto a platform.

The unusual incident was caught on camera at the Kapotnya railway station in the Russian capital city of Moscow which has seen its heaviest snow in 60 years.

The footage shows the snow suddenly slide off a roof as a train comes into the station, crashing down onto the carriages and the platform.

Luckily, nobody was standing close to where it landed but several passengers heading to board the train had to jump back to avoid being hit.

The train doors had not yet opened so nobody on board the passenger train was affected.

Managers of the Moscow Central Circle line, which runs the station at Kapotnya, confirmed that no passengers or members of staff were hurt in the incident.

And they added that the heavy fall of snow did not cause any damage to the train which was able to continue its route without any delay.

Moscow and the surrounding area have been suffering unusually heavy snowfalls of up to 22 centimetres (8.6 inches), unmatched since 1957.

Schools have been closed and one person died when a falling tree hit a power line, according to Moscow Mayor Sergi Sobyanin.
