A prison guard was ambushed outside work by his girlfriend who lay in wait in a wedding dress so she could propose to him.

Zhao Wanping had just left work for the day when he found a surprise waiting for him by the prison gates in Dazhou in Sichuan province, central China.

Yuan Mingyu was outside jail wearing a traditional white gown, holding a bouquet of flowers and a wedding ring.

A video shows how she even asked her friends to hold up a red banner with the words "Zhao Wanping, marry me!" on it.

When he spotted his girlfriend, Zhao came running out of prison, his colleagues clapping and cheering him on.

More than a dozen onlookers gathered to watch the unusual scene outside the prison.

Zhao took off his jacket to protect his girlfriend from the cold but the 28-year-old said: "I am too thrilled, I ‘m not cold at all."

She then proposed to Zhao who accepted, kneeling and putting his ring on her finger.

Zhao said that she had mentioned proposing to him before but he was so busy at work that he had forgotten.

The couple have been in a relationship for nine years but live apart because of work.

Yuan has been planning the proposal since last year and had bought the ring herself.

She travelled from the city of Chengdu, in Sichuan province, central China, where she works as a teacher to pop the question.

Yuan was asked by a local paper whether she felt annoyed that she had to buy the ring.

She said: "No, why would I? It doesn’t make a difference if he or I bought it."
