Philip K Dick (1977) | Non-Linear Time | Alternate Timelines | Simulation Theory | Matrix |
Philip K. Dick’s Metz, France speech was a fascinating and provocative lecture that he gave at a science fiction convention in 1977. In his speech, he explored his concept of orthogonal or right angle time, which means the existence of multiple overlapping realities that vary in quality and content. He related this concept to his own mystical experiences, his novels, and his interpretation of the Christian message of the kingdom of God. He speculated that some people can move laterally from one reality to another, while others remain stuck in their own. He also suggested that there is a cosmic game between a benevolent programmer and a malignant counter player, who create and alter these realities.
This speech was originally given with the aid of a French translator, necessitating the speaker to pause for translation to the audience after nearly every line. The translator has been edited from this video.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Philip K. Dick was an American science fiction writer who wrote 44 novels and about 121 short stories, most of which explored philosophical and social questions such as the nature of reality, perception, human nature, and identity. He was often considered a visionary and influential author, but he struggled with drug abuse and mental illness throughout his life. He died in 1982 at the age of 53, and many of his works were adapted into popular films and TV shows after his death.
Many of Dick's writings have been adapted for the screen. Some of his most acclaimed and influential writings are:
THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE:
This alternative history novel imagines a world where the Axis powers won World War II and now control the United States. It explores the themes of fascism, identity, and the nature of reality. Amazon Prime Video produced a multi-season show by the same name, based off of Dick's book.
UBIK:
In this mind-bending novel, Dick explores the nature of reality and consciousness. It follows a group of people who are involved in a mysterious accident and find themselves in a state of decay and uncertainty.
A SCANNER DARKLY:
This semi-autobiographical novel depicts the drug culture and the effects of substance abuse on the mind and society. It follows an undercover agent who becomes addicted to a hallucinogenic drug and loses his grip on reality.
DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP?:
This dystopian novel is the basis for the film Blade Runner. It deals with the question of what makes us human and the ethical implications of creating artificial life.
THE THREE STIGMATA OF PALMER ELDRITCH:
This novel explores the themes of religion, alienation, and the power of illusion. It depicts a future where humans colonize Mars and use a drug to escape their harsh reality, only to encounter a mysterious entity that may be God or the devil.
