This is the extraordinary moment an elderly woman was taken out of an ambulance and wheeled into a bank on a stretcher so she could collect her pension after staff refused to go outside to check her identity.

The frail pensioner, 87, was being tended to by medics when she sent relatives to pick up her pension payment in the city of Tonala, in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

But staff at the Citibanamex branch refused to release the funds to them, even after they explained that the woman, whose name has not been made public, was waiting outside in the back of an ambulance.

They claimed they needed to see the woman in person but refused to leave the bank to identify her telling relatives: "We do not carry out our duties on the street."

So medics had no choice but to wheel her into the bank on a stretcher, joining a queue with other members of the public, as stunned onlookers filmed the bizarre scene using their phones.

After footage went viral on social networks, Citibanamex contacted the pensioner and apologised to the her, promising compensation for any inconvenience caused by the inflexible bank workers.

A spokesman for Citibanamex: "We regret what happened with regards to the identification procedure of one of our clients in Tonala.

"We spoke with the person involved and apologised for what happened. Citibanamex will work hard to make sure similar situations never happen again."
