Police cleared the area in front of a remand prison in Nice on January 24, after prison guards set fires before the entrance to an adjacent courthouse, in protest against violence and staffing levels in French prisons. Night watchmen at the prison and detainees in the court were unable to leave the building due to the protest, according to French media.. The protest follows a nationwide strike by prison guards on January 22 and prison unions leaving the negotiating table on January 23. In Paris, prison guard protests were threatening to disrupt the first trial related to the 2015 Paris attacks, according to the AP. Credit: Vidéo Grégory Leclerc @Nice_Matin via Storyful
