Boston Mayor Should Be Sacked
We should call out racism wherever we see it, and Boston mayor Michelle Wu, the first person of colour elected mayor of Boston (their words, not mine), held a party that can only be described as advocating racism. An email invitation was accidentally sent to the entire Boston City Council titled “Electeds of Color Holiday Party”. Apparently, this party has been going on for over a decade, but it certainly has come out in the open this year.
Michelle Wu stated, “We’ve had individual conversations with everyone, so people understand that it was truly just an honest mistake that went out in typing the email field. It’s just one of many parties that will be held for Boston elected officials during this holiday season, but this one was only intended to go to the six minority council members. I think we all have been in a position at one point where an email went out and there was a mistake in the recipients, so there was truly just an honest mistake that happened in issuing the invitation.”
So instead of calling out the obvious discrimination involved in hosting this party, she’s instead waffled on about it just being a mistake in the issuing of the email. It was simply a technical issue. How about the fact that you’re only inviting people of certain skin colours to parties. I mean, it doesn’t really need to be stated, but if a Caucasian-Only Party was held, people would be horrified, and rightfully so.
And while I’m here, I may as well call out the racial term “People of Colour”. These people claim they’re against racism, yet they insist on using this racialised term. Not only does is not dissuade racism, it actively promotes it by continually referring to people’s skin colour. If you are truly against racism, well, stop using racial language and hosting parties where only people of certain skin colours are invited.
Boston City Councillor, At-Large, Ruthzee Louijeune, who attended the party on Wednesday night, is described as, “A grounded, thoughtful, and inclusive leader”. Well, inclusive for certain people. Regarding the Party, she said, “It is not at all divisive. It is creating spaces for people, and communities and identities with shared experiences to come together. We are still breaking barriers and it is so important for us to carve out and create that space.” Again, would a Caucasian party be appropriate in the Councillor’s eyes? Obviously not. It seems like if it weren’t for double standards, these people would have no standards at all.
I think that the people of Boston should call this out for what it is and demand that Michelle Wu do one of two things, either call out the party for its obvious racial undertones and ban it from ever taking place again, or step down as mayor. If she’s unwilling to do either, then she should be sacked.
