Several arrests were made as demonstrators rallied outside a federal building in New York City on Thursday, January 11, in support of Ravi Ragbir, an immigrant rights activist who was reportedly detained by immigration officials that morning. According to Buzzfeed, who reported from the scene of the protest, Ragbir was detained during a routine check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and told he would be deported. Eighteen people were arrested during the protest, Buzzfeed reported. Among those arrested during the protest outside the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building were city councilmen Ydanis Rodriguez and Jumaane Williams. New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson was also among the protesters. Both Rodriguez and Williams had been long-time supporters of Ragbir and joined him during an ICE check-in at the same building in May 2017, as reported by Gothamist.
