Thousands of lightning strikes hit Sydney from the evening of January 8 through January 9. This video shows lightning lighting up the sky over Summer Hill, a western suburb of Sydney, in the early hours of January 9. Nearly 5,000 lightning strikes were recorded in the early hours of January 9, 9News reported. The lightning damaged railway and caused train disruptions, according to local media. The storm also uprooted trees and knocked out power for thousands of people. Temperatures dropped as the storm moved through the city but were expected to soar again on January 9.
