Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a no medication treatment for depression using a magnetic coil. The technology is based in Michael Faraday's work in the 1800s. Electroconvulsive therapy for depression involves anesthesia, induced seizures, and memory loss. The challenge was to find an alternative to ECT leading to the development of the first TMS device for research in 1985. No seizures, no side effects, well tolerated, and 70-75% effective at treating major depression.
