Strong Santa Ana winds caused a massive fire to spread throughout Southern California on December 5. The fire burned about 45,000 acres in 13 hours, forcing thousands of people to evacuate. A red flag wind advisory said ridgeline winds would reach up to 45mph, with gusts up to 70mph. Gov. Jerry Brown also declared a state of emergency in LA County.
