"We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light."
- Plato
Child raising practices have a significant impact on the development of children into adulthood. In the featured video presentation by John Stossel, he challenges commonly held beliefs about overprotective parenting. Many individuals view overprotection as a form of care and love but empirical studies reveal surprising and often counterintuitive, consequences.
The phenomenon of overprotective parenting is often observed in families with children who have disabilities. Parents in these situations oftentimes feel compelled to shelter their children, driven by the desire to protect them from societal challenges. While the instinct to shield a disabled child is understandable, this type of overprotection can actually be counterproductive in the long run.
The rise of overprotective parenting is a growing phenomenon in modern society, leading to the popularization of terms such as "helicopter parents," "lawnmower parents," and "cosseting parents." These terms reflect the evolving parenting norms towards a more involved and shielded style.
Lawn mower parents, for instance, seek to "mow down" any obstacles in their child's path, often resulting in discouraged self-sufficiency. Such parenting practices emerged as societal perceptions of risk intensified. Parents became increasingly fearful of external dangers and developed an inclination to manage their children's experiences meticulously.
The term "hyper-parenting," coined by Dr. Alvin Rosenfeld and Nicole Wise; describes a modern approach to parenting, characterized by heightened levels of involvement. This method diverges from conventional parenting practices, by emphasizing excessive attention and control. The authors highlight the negative consequences of this "protective shield," hindering a child's development in various ways.
By constantly sheltering children from challenges and obstacles, parents inadvertently prevent their children from developing essential life skills and resilience. Research has indicated that children who are raised in overly protective environments, struggle to cope with adversity and exhibit higher levels of anxiety and fear, when faced with unfamiliar situations.
Moreover, hyper-parenting results in children growing into emotionally sensitive adults, who are easily triggered and struggle to regulate their emotions. This emotional sensitivity can manifest in adult behaviors that resemble childish tantrums or outbursts, as individuals may not have developed the necessary coping mechanisms to deal with stress or disappointment.
One potential consequence of hyper-parenting, is the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The constant need for control and reassurance from caregivers can exacerbate anxiety and lead to maladaptive behaviors. The emergence of events like the recent pandemic, along with the resulting protective measures like mask mandates and lockdowns; exasperates the harm done to children; making the comments made by the comedian Bill Maher, a prophetic warning.

The life story of the renowned personality, Howard Hughes, serves as yet another illustration of the detrimental consequences of hyper-parenting. Hughes, a billionaire from the 20th century, experienced the constant scrutiny of an overly protective mother who was continuously on alert for any signs of sickness, especially polio.
This heightened fear of illness eventually led Hughes to develop germophobia, which materialized in extreme behaviors like restricting his diet to only chicken and chocolate, collecting his urine in containers and being constantly surrounded by Kleenex boxes.
A darker element to hyper-parenting goes beyond individual families. One of the top alphabet-soup gang, behavioral analysis; found a connection between hyper-parenting and violent behavior in young people. This research underscores the findings and conclusions by Dr. Alvin Rosenfeld and Nicole Wise, indicating that excessive control and limited autonomy, can foster feelings of resentment, frustration and maladaptive behaviors.
Hyper-parenting can result in children feeling entitled, as they become used to their parents fulfilling all their needs and resolving all their problems. This could manifest tendencies towards developing traits associated with the antisocial personality spectrum (ASPS) among individuals who have been raised in such environments.
The host of disorders commonly found in this spectrum, encompasses various pathologies by those brought up in these circumstances: narcissist, sociopath, borderline personality disorder, god complex and Machiavellianism.
Narcissism reflects an inflated sense of self-importance and entitlement. Such children are often unable to forge healthy relationships, as they tend to prioritize their needs over the well-being of others. Similarly, sociopathy manifests as a disregard for societal norms and a lack of empathy. Borderline personality disorder, characterized by emotional instability and fear of abandonment, also emerges as a consequence of overprotection.
Those displaying a god complex often perceive themselves as superior, posing a significant threat to societal order. Lastly, Machiavellianism, defined by manipulation and deceit as means to attain one's goals, further illustrates the moral decay that may arise from inadequate parenting practices.
These are also the same mental condition that exists within serial killers. By restricting a child's interactions and experiences, overprotective parents inadvertently hinder their child's ability to develop crucial social skills such as empathy, communication and conflict resolution. These deficits in social development can have long-lasting effects on a child's ability to navigate relationships and communicate effectively in adulthood.
With the examination of various instances of violent underage attacks, including the Columbine shootings, reveals a common thread - overprotective parenting. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold's motivation for the assault, the media initially attributed the attackers' motivations to bullying.
However, subsequent investigations failed to find conclusive evidence supporting this claim. Despite this lack of evidence, corrections or revisions to the initial narrative were not widely publicized, leaving a potentially inaccurate perception of the events in the public consciousness.

The media plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and there is evidence to suggest that the corporate news media often plays a part in covering up or downplaying certain details concerning violent acts committed by those who've been raised in hyper-parenting environments, which creates a skewed view of reality. Making it difficult for the public to fully understand the motivations and actions of these individuals.
The connection between overprotective parenting and the development of behaviors associated with the antisocial personality spectrum is both profound and concerning. The systemic issues plaguing parenting and the institutions, charged with aiding in a child's development; highlights a troubling trend. The prioritization of financial gain over ethical values is clearly visible in the commercialization of these institutions.
Policymakers often favor regulations that prioritize funding, over the welfare of children. This creates a cyclical problem where the needs of children become secondary to financial interests. One crucial aspect of this discourse is the political benefits from alliances with entities such as teachers' unions. These unions often advocate for educational policies that align with their interests, promoting narratives that can sometimes diverge from objective truth.
One of the key factors contributing to this deviant behavior is the abandonment of God's truth. Individuals like Jenn-Anne Gledhill (one of the individuals that was featured in the video), a Chicago Tribune blogger, may claim to be Christian but do not adhere to Biblical principles. Anyone saying they are Christian and assuming that they are Biblical, is a mistake. As illustrated in 2 Peter 2:1-3.
"The one who will not use the rod hates his son but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently."
- Proverbs 13:24
The deviant parenting practices observed in society today can be traced back to the erosion of traditional family values in the 1960s, with influential figures like child psychologist, Dr. Benjamin Spock; who famously advocated for a more permissive style of parenting, promoting the idea of being a friend rather than an authoritarian.
Dr. Spock promoting a more permissive and lenient approach to child-rearing.
This shift away from Biblical child-raising has contributed to the prevalence of unhealthy relationships and dynamics within families, leading to confusion and manipulation among individuals. Fathers catering to their daughters' desires to dress inappropriately or engage in behaviors typically associated with a different gender can reinforce harmful stereotypes and perpetuate unhealthy relationship dynamics.
