A video has emerged on October 20 of a school bus driver taking a risky shortcut driving through a flooded river with a coach full of young pupils. The coach packed with students and teachers accelerated across the San Isidro River in Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines.

The heavy rains caused river water levels to swell, so when the vehicle plunged into a deeper part of the river, the strong currents almost washed the school bus away. Fortunately, driver’s gamble paid off and the bus emerged safely on the other side of the river.

Onlooker Jerlyn Dalagan says that he held his breath when the bus was crossing the river because it looked like it wasn’t going to make it over. Everyone is happy that such disaster was avoided.

Local officials inform that vehicles sometimes take the shortcut across that part of the creek, however it is very risky to make this turn after heavy rains.

Christopher Ebal from the Department of Public Works and Highways says that they are now raising funds for a bridge, in order to facilitate traffic and enable safe crossing.

The river is really unsafe especially during the rainy season and there were several attempts to use steel structure, which unfortunately got destroyed because of the strong water current.
