Remember Tom Hurndall On November 27th
November 27th is the birthday of Tom Hurndall, who was shot in the head on April 11, 2003, by an Israeli military sniper as he rescued several young children from Israeli gunfire. Tom, who was 22 years old, was a photographer, peace activist, and student who had volunteered for the International Solidarity Movement. He was in Gaza as a photojournalist, documenting the inhumane living conditions endured by its Palestinian residents. The day of his shooting, he had seen a group of children, aged four to seven years old, playing in the street when gunshots from the rifles of Israeli soldiers erupted and began hitting the dirt between them. Many of the children were able to escape, but three stood motionless in the road, overcome by fear. Tom ran into the midst of the gunfire and was able to rush one child to safety, but when he returned for the two small girls still standing in the street, an Israeli sniper fired a live round into his head. Tom was wearing an orange fluorescent vest to distinctly mark himself as an unarmed civilian. Despite the urgency of the circumstances, Israeli officials delayed his transport to receive specialized medical care by more than two and a half hours. He remained in a persistent vegetative state leading up to his death nine months later.
