This beautiful soul was abandoned by the roadside

This gentle dog was discarded by the roadside in Texas on a cold day. As the car drove off, the trembling dog watched and likely wondered what it had done wrong and if the owner would come back. They didn't come back and neighbours knew that the dog had been dumped, like thousands each year in Texas. This state has one of the highest rates of dogs being discarded and it has almost ten times the rate of euthanasia in high kill shelters of any state in the U.S.A.
Dogs in Texas continue to be thrown away faster than shelters like Black Dog Farm (Texas) can help them. Jennifer and Jim take calls every week about animals in distress. They are animals that will die alone in the cold, from starvation, or they will find their way to a shelter that cannot afford to feed them. They will live a few days in noise and confusion before they are put to death.
Operating at more than capacity, Jennifer and Jim, and their children do what they can to rescue these dogs and find them loving forever homes as fast as possible. It is essential that they work quickly because they will be filling the spots as fast as they can place the dogs. They will also be struggling to manage the costs of veterinary care and food for the animals while they are being cared for.
Black Dog Farm and Rescue takes in dogs, cats, cows, goats, chickens, and almost any animal with a pulse. Every animal here has access to veterinary care, nutrition, and love. Every animal finds a home that is carefully screened and fitted for the needs of the animals. The ones who simply could not adapt to life with a new family find their forever homes here where they can thrive and be happy.
"Irene", as she is now called, was a trembling, cowering dog who needed an hour of coaxing to allow a collar to be placed on her neck. She ate eagerly and watched Jennifer carefully, hoping for a gentle hand and a warm place to go. She calmed down quickly on the car ride home and walked happily on a leash, seeming to sense that her new friends meant her no harm. It was obvious that she had recently been nursing pups, or soon would be. In the next few days, Irene will receive vaccinations and a checkup to see if she is pregnant and to see what care she will need.
The cost of rescuing animals is high. Black Dog Farm and rescue relies on generosity from those who follow and support their efforts. They do what they do as volunteers, and every dollar given by friends and family is used for the care of the gentle souls who find their way here.
