An activist group held a protest calling for justice for refugees at Victoria’s Parliament on Wednesday, October 25, featuring a solo cellist playing a Kurdish poem composed to a song by the journalist Behrouz Boochani. The Whistleblowers, Activists and Citizens Alliance “occupied” Spring Street in support of refugees living at a detention centre on Manus Island, which was due to be closed by the Australian government on October 31. “With contracts on Manus officially ending on 31st of October, people in the detention centre are being cut off from essential services and denied the protection that’s encouraged by the Human Rights Charter,” the activist group said.
