We can’t decide if the intrepid man in this shocking footage has a death wish or just doesn’t give a damn! Whatever it is, seeing him swimming casually around two fully grown Southern Right whales makes the hairs on our arms rise.

Not only does he swim dangerously close to the aquatic mammals in the clip, but the daredevil can be also seen touching one of them. What is he thinking? The whale can be seen lifting its head after being prodded but then proceeds to circle the swimmer.

It might not seem like much, given the whales’ mass as opposed to the man’s lack thereof, but this kind of behavior in the wild is considered animal harassment and is an illegal offence, according to the Marine Mammal Protection Act, as it is seen as harmful to the animals.

The footage was captured by tour operator Graeme Grant, from Cape Town, after spotting the swimmer floating dangerously close to the whales.

According to Graeme’s testimony, there were four whales in that bay, but two of them split from the group and started chasing each other, coming really close to the public’s footpath.

He then adds: “We then saw a man in the water, and I couldn’t believe it when he actually touched one of the whales. [...] What the swimmer did was foolish, as well as dangerous and illegal, and I hate to see harassment of whales, so I can’t endorse his actions in any way."

And to think that one swat of that whale’s fin could knock that man out for eternity! Incredible!
