A dramatic explosion that ripped through an oil rig in Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, on October 15 was captured up close through the telescope of a man over a mile away. Authorities said at least seven people were injured, some severely, in an oil rig explosion on Sunday evening, local media reported. While observers watched the oil rig burn from the shore, Erik Hanson filmed the flames through the lens of his telescope while standing on the back balcony of his home in Kenner that overlooks Lake Pontchartrain. The New Orleans Advocate reported that the platform caught fire after cleaning chemicals were ignited shortly after 7 pm. Witnesses reported hearing roaring miles away from Lake Pontchartrain, where the rig was, with some telling local reporters they mistook it for thunder. Credit: Erik Hanson via Storyful
