The RNLI in Rosslare, Wexford, rescued three people from a stricken yacht on October 16, the same day that ex-Hurricane Ophelia made its way across the island of Ireland. The RNLI had told people to stay out of the sea during the hurricane. One woman was killed in Waterford after a tree fell on the vehicle she was travelling in. In Louth, two kit surfers caused a Coast Guard helicopter to be called out. Met Éireann, the Irish weather service, warned that Ophelia was likely to be the most severe weather event to hit the country in over 50 years. RTE News reported that more than 100,000 homes were without electricity, while transport services across the country were stopped. Dublin Airport had to cancel 135 flights.
