Fast food restaurant chain Nando’s apologised to a customer after her video of maggots crawling inside her chicken in Newcastle, New South Wales, went viral. Emy Wamboi said she was dining with her seven-year-old son on September 27 at a Nando’s in Kotara, New South Wales, when she noticed something strange about her meal. She said she has not eaten chicken since the incident. ABC Australia reported that Nando’s apologised to Wamboi and offered her a full refund, but defended their cooking and hygiene procedures. “Our chicken is made to order and a fly or maggots could not have survived the cooking process, which includes placing the chicken on a grill with an operating surface temperature of over 350 degrees [Celsius],” a Nando’s statement read. “As the restaurant is open to the environment, and the maggots were found on the skin of the chicken, we believe this incident is the result of an airborne fly landing on the chicken in the short period of time between when it was plated and subsequently discovered by the customer at her table.” The Newcastle City Council inspectors are investigating the incident.
