A memorial service for fallen off-duty Las Vegas officer Charleston Hartfield was held at Police Memorial Park on the evening of Thursday, October 5. Hartfield was killed in the Mandalay Bay shooting on October 1, along with 58 other people. The 34-year-old husband and father of two children was attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival with his wife that night, who managed to escape unharmed. He served 16 years in the Army and Army National Guard before joining the Las Vegas Metro Police in 2002, according to Fox5 Vegas. “Charlie was the hardest working man I’ve ever known. He did this for his family,” one officer was quoted in the Fox5 report. Another spoke of how much Charlie loved his country and his city, and that he was the most patriotic person he’d ever met. The candlelight vigil was attended by officers from the Las Vegas Metro Police, friends and family, and members of the community.
