Who Is Mike Johnson - The New Speaker of the House, 4218

It looks like 51-year-old Representative Mike Johnson, of Louisiana, will be the new Speaker of the House.

Republican House members decided they were not going home last night until they had a candidate who would likely win the needed 215 votes in a floor vote needed to become speaker.

After three rounds of voting yesterday it came down to the final two candidates, Byron Donalds of Florida, or Mike Johnson. Johnson won the third round of voting by a large margin and is expected to win the near unanimous support of Republicans in the floor vote, perhaps later today.

Johnson, who is a Constitutional attorney, has been in Congress since 2017, and has a Liberty Score of 74%.

He played a key role in initiating the Texas Amicus Brief in 2020 and voted against the certification of the 2020 presidential election results, which he viewed as fraudulent.

He served on President Trump’s legal defense team during both his 2019 and 2020 Senate impeachment trials.
