Utqiagvik, Alaska, experienced coastal flooding on Friday, September 29, as storms hit the United State’s most northerly city. Utqiagvik was formerly known as Barrow. The city voted to restore its indigenous name in 2016. The National Weather Service issued a coastal flooding warning after high winds and a storm surge helped waves breached the sea wall in Utqiagvik. Researchers have been following coastal flooding and erosion in Utqiagvik, and news agencies have covered the decline of polar bears and walruses in the region for nearly a decade. In this 2010 article from Smithsonian Magazine, then-Barrow was called a “breeding ground for climate change.” Credit: Facebook/Jesse Darling via Storyful
