Students occupied the University of Barcelona on Friday, September 22, in another grand display of support for the referendum on Catalan independence planned for the start of next month. The central government in Madrid has blocked the vote and chartered three ferries in the ports of Barcelona and Tarragona to house additional police dispatched to the region. Each of the ferries has a capacity of over 6,500 passengers. Large number of supporters of Catalan independence have protested repeatedly over the last week as political tensions between the regional government and Madrid came to a head with raids on administrative offices and arrests of officials.
