Two nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in a span of three days to end World War 2. The first drop occurred on August 6, 1945, with a bomb named "little boy" and an aircraft named "Enola gay" named after the pilot's mother, with a b-29 bomber. The bomb dropped on Nagasaki, however, was named "Fatman" with a similar b-29 bomber. 80,000 persons were killed by the first bomb as a result of the blast, heat, and radiation exposure. Many more people experienced long-term health consequences. Similar to Nagasaki, 70000 people died in bombs there. The steep topography near Nagasaki constrained the scope of the damage compared to Hiroshima. There were five Japanese cities on the US’s initial hit list and Nagasaki was not one of them. The list included Kokura, Hiroshima, Yokohama, Niigata and Kyoto. It’s said that Kyoto was ultimately spared because US Secretary of War Henry Stimson was fond of the ancient Japanese capital, having spent his honeymoon there decades earlier. Nagasaki took its place instead.
