The term milkshake was first used in 1885. The drink was originally an alcoholic whiskey drink. Today's milkshakes weren't invented until the 1930s. Milkshakes were a special treat in the early 1900s because hand blender's weren't invented yet. Malted milkshakes became popular thanks to Walgreens.
