Hurricane Irma caused widespread damage after passing over the British Virgin Islands (BVI), over September 6 and 7, destroying moorings and buildings in the capital, Road Town, which is on the largest of the islands, Tortola. Among the structures damaged was the BVI government building in Road Town, which was found abandoned and lacking security on September 7, after the storm had passed. British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said the UK had positioned a landing ship in the disaster zone and its personnel were helping local authorities restore water and sanitation, supplying shelter to those made homeless, and offering medical assistance if required.
