Scuffles broke out as hundreds of protesters faced off with police in South Korea’s Seongju county overnight into Thursday, September 7, over the installation of new rocket launchers at a nearby US missile defense base. The latest protests come hours ahead of the planned installation of four Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems locally, about 300 kilometres south of Seoul, and amid escalating tensions with North Korea. The controversial deployment of the launchers was agreed over a year ago but postponed due to environmental concerns by community groups.
