Using social media pages to find the addresses to people who need help, Lori McDaniel and other Baytown, Texas, residents set out in fishing boats, airboats and jet skis to rescue people and animals trapped by rising floodwaters on August 29. Comments left on her Facebook live-streams alert McDaniel to the addresses of people who need help. Though most are relieved and happy to get on the boat, some people won’t go with the citizen-rescuers. McDaniel said some are waiting on other rescues and some are afraid. “We’ve begged them to come with us but they refuse,” said McDaniel. “One has a 10-day-old baby and said he’s scared to leave and would rather ride it out. We begged, but he wouldn’t. He was upstairs so I’m hoping they stay safe.” The citizen-rescuers also went back for pets that were left behind, entering houses to search for dogs and cats and using crates and cages to keep the animals safe on the boat.
