More than half of the buildings in Rockport, Texas, were beyond repair after Tropical Storm Harvey hit the seaside town on Saturday, August 26. The storm was a category four hurricane when it made landfall. Mayor Charles Wax said in a letter to the community on Monday that 30-40 percent of the homes and buildings were completely destroyed by the storm. Another 30 percent of the buildings were substandard and beyond repair. Thousands of electric workers were in the city attempting to restore power, but the mayor also told residents who evacuated that it was not the time to return. “No power, no water, no bathroom facilities, no gasoline, no stores and no restaurants,” he wrote. “There is still debris on the roadway, and many residents coming in to check their homes have left with remnants that puncture their tires.” He also said the rumors of widespread looting and multiple deaths on social media were incorrect. Wax said one person died during the storm and was the result of a fire. This footage shows the aftermath of the storm. Credit: YouTube/Raul Tarango via Storyful
