The skies above Tasmania lit up in a colorful display that dazzled stargazers on August 23. The Mercury reported astrophotographers braved cold weather, with many making a trip to national parks and cliff sides, to set up for a perfect photo or video of the Southern Lights. The Aurora Australis is created when the solar wind, thrown into space by the sun, carries particles that interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and produce the energy releases we call auroras.
