Typhoon Hato slammed southern Mainland China after hitting Hong Kong and Macau on August 23, flooding streets, overturning cars and severely damaging roads and structures in multiple cities, particularly Zhuhai, located in Guangdong province. This video, shot in Zhuhai’s Xiangzhou distrinct, shows waves churned up by the storm washing through the city streets and submerging cars. According to the South China Morning Post, the waves in Zhuhai were as high as 31 feet, and the at least one person died in Zhongshan, while parts of Guangdong received about 4 to 10 inches of rain per hour. In nearby Hong Kong, Typhoon Hato’s arrival caused the city’s observatory to raise the typhoon 10 signal – the highest out of Hong Kong’s eight storm warnings. This is the first time a number 10 signal has been issued since 2012.
