Fans of football player Colin Kaepernick held a solidarity protest outside the NFL’s headquarters in New York City on August 23. The former quarterback opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March and has remained unsigned. As the New York Times reported, analysts believe Kaepernick is not being drafted due to his political views. Kaepernick’s football career has been marred by controversy since he took a knee during the US national anthem at a September 2016 game. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media after the game.
