Groups of activists gathered outside Chile’s constitutional court on August 21, some in support and others in opposition to a legal ruling that allows women to seek an abortion in certain cases. The court ruled that a law legalizing abortion in certain cases does not violate the constitution, which Reuters described as a win for President Michelle Bachelet’s center-left coalition and for groups that have campaigned for years against the country’s ban. Chile had prohibited abortion in all cases since 1989. The law allows abortions in the case where the mother’s life is in danger, a fetus is unviable, or when a pregnancy results from rape.
