“It’s surreal for our daughter to be at home with us.” says the mother of a four year old who has spent her entire life in and out of intensive care. Until now.

Little Maham Naz suffers from a rare form of muscular dystrophy. The girl is so helpless, she needs 24 hour care with all her daily activities, eating and taking medication through a tube. Now, with the help of carers, Maham is finally able to come home.

Her mom, 40-year-old Nomia Naz, says that the best part about Maham coming home is that they get to be a family all over again. “When she was really ill we thought there was no light at the end of the tunnel but she has kept us going.”

They noticed her symptoms of muscular weakness back when she was just a baby, because she struggled to move and swallow food. She would choke during feeding, which told her mom that she cannot be a normal child.

Maham’s condition also made her incredibly susceptible to viruses, which was the main reason why she was in and out of Birmingham’s Children Hospital her entire life. Muscular Dystrophy is so rare, doctors had to consult specialists to be sure.

Now that she is home, Maham’s sisters love playing with her, painting her nails and reading her stories. The mother says that she is more vocal now that she is home and around her sisters.
