Winter conditions can be harsh on even the most resilient of animals. The cold temperatures can make our bodies shut down and we wouldn’t stand a chance against it. Some animals have a thick layer of fur to protect them, but sometimes even that isn’t enough. The cold, together with the icy pellets of snow has been a deadly combination for many animals, including humans. Just think of the dinosaurs and how their whole race went extinct when the Ice Age came.

There is only one thing worse than the biting kiss of the cold, and that’s freezing temperatures when you are soaking wet. The water makes it appear even colder than it is and it lulls you in a state of hypothermia, faster than a bullet. Unfortunately, this was the case with this old pooch.

Sam, a 13-year-old Lab mix, fell into the waters of an icy Iowa river. Quickly getting trapped and immobilized by the cold of the water, the pupper’s only way of getting out was calling for help. His wails of anguished were thankfully heard by a kind passerby who immediately dialed 911, while keeping Sam company.

The firefighters came as soon as possible, paddling a boat so they can get Sam aboard and rescue the poor pooch. His bottom half was so cold, he could hardly feel anything. Thankfully, the firefighters brought a vet with them and he wrapped the pup in warm blankets to bring his temperature to normal. After only 30 minutes, Sam was so happy, he even started wagging his tail. Don’t you just love happy endings like this one?!
