Andre Medvedev, former commander of the Wagner Special Military Company, who fled Russia and sought asylum in Norway, was detained by Norwegian police while trying to escape across the border in a risky attempt.
On Friday evening 22 September, Medvedev was caught after dark in the village of Grense Jakobselv on the border between Norway and the Russian Federation. Medvedev had intended to reach Russia's Kola Peninsula with this dangerous move.
Finnmark regional police confirmed that a man in his 20s was detained while trying to cross the border illegally. Although the identity and nationality of the person was not specified, police confirmed that Medvedev was trying to travel from Norway to Russia. Crossing the land border is prohibited in the region.
Medvedev tried to cross the border just a few hours after he had previously spoken to a Barents Observer journalist. This 27-year-old former Wagner Group fighter announced his intention to cross the border, saying that someone would take him.
Medvedev acted uneasily but decisively. He was convinced that he would be extradited to Ukraine and considered returning to Russia a safer alternative. It is not yet known how Medvedev reached this area, because public transport does not go to the border river.
