Imani Guillory-Fruge, daughter of former senator of Louisiana Elbert Lee Guillory, had the surprise of her lifetime after a specialist check-up for a gallbladder issue. Imani had just gotten engaged to Jason Fruge, whom she met through a mutual friend. But less than a month later, Imani was due for an X-Ray for her gallbladder after a routine ultrasound.

“The nurse was giving me an ultrasound, and all of a sudden, she started looking at my paperwork," Imani says. “ ‘You’re getting an x-ray? You can’t,’ she said. She looked at me so puzzled, like I was nuts. And then, she looked at me, touched me so gently on my arm, and said, ‘Sweetheart … do you know that you’re with child?’"

The baby was due on Jan. 21, a few weeks from the day Imani found out she was expecting. But Mother Nature had different plans. “Two days later, I was in excruciating pain," Imani recalls. “I was at my mom’s, and I woke her up at 4 a.m., went into the bathtub thinking a warm bath would help. But I got out of the tub, and I was bleeding."

The next thing she knew, the young mom welcomed her baby son Jason Paul, weighing more than 6.5 pounds and was 19 inches long. The new mom had no idea how to change a diaper on her baby, who was born with a white complexion like his dad, even though his mom is African American.

“Everything happens for a reason," she says. “God puts things in your life and you could go through the greatest struggle, but it’s all worth it."
