Roads Cut Off and Villages Evacuated Due to Wildfires in Central Portugal

Residents were warned not to travel on roads leading to Mação, in Santarém, central Portugal, on August 16, due to dangers posed by wildfires and smoke. The village of Vale de Amêndoa in Mação was evacuated due to the fires that date. The Minister of Internal Administration said that most of the recent fires in Portugal had been started as the result of negligent or intentional human action, and that 91 arrests had been made.
