Many in the Northland flocked outside to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights on Monday, September 18. WDIO has shared a bunch of pictures from viewers on our website, but David Johnson captured the wonder in the skies of Grand Marais, Minnesota in a timelapse.

On Monday, the minor geomagnetic storm was a G1 with a planetary k (Kp) index of 5.

Our region of Minnesota, Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan needs a Kp-index of 5 for a shot at the northern lights, and that requires a minor geomagnetic storm. WDIO
