Swimmer Michael Phelps bit back at a golf fan attending the US PGA Championship in Quail Hollow, North Carolina, on August 10, trading snark for snark over the Olympian’s stunt swim against a great white for a cable TV promotion. Phelps was accompanying competitor Jordan Speith when, at one point along the course, a fan said Phelps jumped the shark during his sort-of swim-off to mark Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. “That shark crushed you,” the fan was heard saying, to which Phelps icily replied, “You should try to swim him.” The 32-year-old Baltimore athlete drew widespread criticism when he “raced” a shark as part of Shark Week, which aired the week of July 23.
