The vaquita is a small porpoise species that is native to the Gulf of California, Mexico. They are the smallest cetaceans in the world, measuring up to 5 feet in length and weighing around 120 pounds. Unfortunately, the vaquita is also one of the most endangered marine mammals, with only an estimated 10 individuals remaining in the wild as of 2021. This is primarily due to accidental entanglement in fishing nets, as well as habitat loss and pollution. Conservation efforts are currently underway to try and save this species from extinction.
