On August 19, 2023, Whitman County Sheriff Deputy Petersen was assisting the Pullman Police Department with a traffic stop when he noticed a vehicle traveling with no headlights on. He left the Pullman PD traffic stop and attempted to catch up to the other vehicle. He initiated a traffic stop, where the 18 year-old driver claimed she did not have her driver's license. Deputy Petersen alleges that he smelled alcohol in the vehicle, so he asked the driver to step out and perform standardized field sobriety tests. She seemed to perform them quite well (comment down below what you think). When she was asked to submit to a voluntarily preliminary breath test (PBT), she refused. Deputy Petersen claimed that based on his training and experience, he felt the driver was operating the vehicle under the influence and she was arrested. She was transported to the Pullman Police Department, where the results of her evidentiary breath test was 0.023% BAC, just over the legal limit for someone under 21 years of age. She was eventually issued a traffic summons and was released to a sober adult. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
