Anyone who has suffered from vertigo can tell you that the dizzy spells can be scary and disruptive to their daily lives.

Vertigo can have various underlying medical causes, but it affects millions of people. For Sue Rickers, her vertigo was so debilitating that she couldn’t do anything. “I couldn’t drive, I couldn’t walk, I had to hold on to the wall,” Rickers tells CBS News. “It was very, very scary.”

She saw a video of Dr. Foster’s treatment and tried the technique and it worked! The treatment is called the “half-somersault maneuver” and it has helped millions of people around the world.

Dr. Foster suffered from vertigo herself and being a doctor of otolaryngology (a specialist in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat), she knew scientifically what was happening and decided to come up with a solution.

The first step is to tip your head up towards the ceiling. Dr. Foster says you may feel a little dizzy doing this. Then, you put your head completely upside down as if you’re going to do a somersault. Once in that position, look at your left elbow if you’re treating the left ear, or look to your right elbow if treating your right ear. The side you get most dizzy when you lie down or roll over is the ear that is affected, and causing the vertigo.

Wait for the dizziness to stop, then raise your head to back level. After the dizziness stops again, bring your head fully back by sit back quickly. You may have to do this several times for it to work.

Dr. Foster explains the reason why vertigo occurs and shares the steps involved in her “half-somersault maneuver” in detail in her video below.

If you know someone who gets vertigo, share this video with them as it just may help improve their lives!
