The Whittier Fire in Santa Barbara County, California, grew significantly overnight into Saturday, July 15, up to 17,364 acres. The fire was 35 percent contained as of Saturday morning, which was down from the previous report. On Friday night, the fire had stood at nearly 13,200 acres and was 52 percent contained, according to an official report. Mandatory evacuations were in effect, and officials had issued an air quality warning because of smoke and ash in the area. About 2,700 people had been evacuated, according to a local news report.
