A crowd of protesters gathered at the offices of News Corp Australia on Thursday, July 13, to voice their anger over an article, published in the Daily Telegraph the day before, about the health of young people across New South Wales. With the headline “Fat Chance Of Being Healthy”, the article included reference to the percentage of secondary students who identify as “attracted to people of the same sex as them or to both sexes,” which critics blasted as suggesting that gay, lesbian and bisexual students are unhealthy. The article, which also featured the sub-heading: “Young Aussies only have themselves to blame”, also caused backlash on social media. In response, editor Chris Dore published a statement in which he said the story was “a statistical picture of young people’s lives, from where they live to how they live.” “Unfortunately the presentation of the story has been misinterpreted. The story in no way suggests, or intends to suggest, that same-sex relationships are unhealthy. There is no judgement expressed at all in the story other than about diet,” Dore wrote. On Thursday, protesters rallied at the News Corp Australia office carrying a rainbow flag and drew a rainbow in chalk on the footpath outside the building. In a post to Facebook advertising the event, the group wrote: “We condemn the Daily Telegraph for their shameful behavior, categorising same sex attraction as an ‘illness’ and major health risk. Not only is this factually untrue, but it is harmful rhetoric that tells all LGBTQI+ folk that there is something wrong with them.” Credit: Twitter/Niki Burnside via Storyful
